On Dean not having the ritual memorized, I've changed my mind about it; several people have pointed out to me that the boys are relatively new to exorcisms. Phantom Traveler was the first time they ever saw the ritual. And they haven't done that many exorcisms since, and Bobby and Sam both used the book when they did it. It's disappointing that Dean wouldn't have memorized it yet, but it's not out of continuity, either.
It's still a convenient way to trap Dean, but it wasn't the character bending to the plot the way I'd feared.
That's a good assessment of what Bobby is to them. Very different than John. Defined by his absences is a nice way of putting it.
That's all...I'll be over here, 'cause the show's clicking along well for me this year. The alienation between Sam and Dean is tough. I noticed also the eps don't end with them the way it used to. The moments of revelation between them -- that was transferred to Bobby and Dean, and Sam and Ruby. It's unsettling. But I think it's extremely well done. Unhappy-making but not in a lackluster way.
