Anybody know anything about external hard drives? What should I be looking for?

"What should I be looking for?"
That's an open-ended question--what do you want? What are you planning to use it for? Is it going to be stationary or do you want something portable?

I bought this one about a month ago, and I've been totally happy with it.

I've had a lot of friends have problems w/ La Cie, so I'd stay away from those if you can.

Depends on the space you need and the space it will occupy. You shouldn't be paying more than $0.40 cents per gig, probably less, now. I think I got my 250 gig for like $70, and even that's on the more expensive end.

Western Digital is good. I like them. They also have a "my book" that looks kinda like a book. But if you want it solely for vanity reasons, might I suggest the Lego brick model? I don't know that that's the one my roommie has, but there's something like it out there.

And speaking as a contrary voice, I have a LaCie rugged drive, which has small capacity for the money, only 80GB, but my husband dropped it on a pointy hard surface that dented the case but it still works fine.

Yes, well, ten minutes left in the work day and nothing to do. What do you want from me? I just need a supplementary back-up system. Reliable redundancy is really all I'm looking for. I just figured people would have stories.

Yeah, gryphon's right, you need to be more specific. If you really don't care that much, I'd go for LACIE. They work great. I've been using a Lacie drive with 250 gigs for the past year and a half to store all my movies and TV shows and I've had absolutely no problems with it. Pretty standard plug-n-play.
