I'm sort of annoyed that the show basically used him as a woman-in-refrigerator since he seems to be one of the only people John turned to for help when he was raising the boys.
On the other hand, I'm glad it leaves the door wide open for a lot of the great stories that have been written about him. :-)
I can just see Sam completely latching on to Jim as a father figure so different from his own father -- maybe so much closer to what he thinks a father should be.
