The beanie baby thing is, I guess, just One Of Those Things. My personal experience was reading Slayers fanfic and wondering why Zelgadis was writing love poetry to/swearing eternal vengeance over the destruction of/departing the group to settle down with his COFFE MUG. I understood where it came from, but I certainly didn't understand how it snowballed.
Slayers, by the way, is notable as a fandom full of what would, in any other fandom, be slashers, but rarely are. (I should probably change that to was/were -- it seems to mostly be dead nowadays.)
Similar things: "Akane's Cooking LIVES!"; "Ritsuko Knows About Maya And Is Being A Bitch." Some come from a canon-spark, some are entirely fandom-born, but there's definitely something about the snowball effect...
