One of my favorite channels, FilmJoy has two main shows: Movies with Mikey and Deep Dive. FilmJoy’s overall goal is to talk about the things they love about movies. A lot of film youtube is take-downs—it’s easy, and it gets hits. FilmJoy is trying to counter that.
Movies with Mikey are more traditional video essays, but with a very specific style, and always talking about things the creator is excited about. Another channel I watch as soon as they drop. This is a video that creates an arbitrary system to determine how much Christmas is in a movie and then ranks a bunch of them. Cause.
Deep Dive, the other FilmJoy show, watches terrible movies but they only allow themselves to say positive things about them. They often end up talking about the excellent costuming or production design in terribly written and acted movies, and sometimes they end up outright liking a movie that has been widely dismissed, as they do in this episode, on League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. As it requires a bunch of friends to be in the same place to film, Deep Dive has been on hiatus since the pandemic started.
