So, the majority of television I watch at this point is actually youtube. I’m apparently a weirdo for youtube users in that I subscribe to 60+ channels and watch them from the subscription page (I basically ignore the algorithm). They’re a mix of educational channels and pop culture criticism. What I love about youtube creators is that, though they are still influenced by youtube’s policies and its algorithm, they have a lot more freedom as independent creators than anything you’d see from a network, so it’s possible to get a lot of different perspectives.

To give myself something to post, I thought I’d post recommendations. I’m going alphabetically rather than trying to rank them. But if you’re looking for new independent creators to follow, might be interesting.

Be Kind Rewind

This channel focuses on the history of Oscar best actress races, providing a lot of excellent historical context and criticism of the whole awards machinery. She’s branched out into other related topics (and her December 25 film recommendations videos are excellent). A great channel also to find some deeper cuts for older movies that are worth revisiting. This video is on the Julie Andrews/Audrey Hepburn Oscar controversy—the year Audrey was nominated for Eliza Doolittle, the role Julie Andrews originated on stage.
