Addams Family Values
May. 13th, 2014 06:59 pmIn today's procrastination, I rewatched Addams Family Values, which was a favorite when it came out, and I was the right age to be the target market.
- It is incredibly broad in its satire. Bout right for a 12-year-old, but subtle it's not.
- The sexual politics are awful (much as I love Joan Cusack).
- The racism is... I know all of the racist things are couched as being done by the "bad guy" counselors, and Wednesday's appropriation of them is revenge, not endorsement, but they do run around the village doing the stereotyped yell and I'm just...generally uncomfortable with all of it.
- I had not realized that David Krumholtz and Peter MacNicol costar years before they costar in Numb3rs.
- I still like it. Pretty much exclusively for the performances of Christina Ricci, Raul Julia, and Anjelica Huston, all of whom are fabulous.
- Christopher Lloyd, on the other hand is excruciating to watch. God. That bit of casting is terrible.
- But Christina Ricci still makes it worth it.
