I, through a mixture of extremely itchy bug bites and paranoia, did not really sleep last night, pretty much undoing all the sleeping and napping I did this weekend to recover from Mexico. *SIGH*

Things I watched/read:

Foundation by Isaac Asimov - I am kind of meh about this, I confess. I've come to the conclusion that Asimov is incapable of writing a novel, as he is so vastly more interested in plot mechanics and puzzles than characters that his characters are a jumble of confusingly named plot expositors. Which is not to say the puzzles he's writing about aren't interesting. But naming two important characters Hari Seldon and Salvor Hardin is not a way for a writer to endear himself to me. Basically, I can see what he's doing with this series, but it's not really my bag, and I'm not sure I want to haul through, what is it, six more books? to get to the conclusion.

Too Big to Fail, the docu-film by HBO - This is based on the book, which I have not yet read but which is on the list. I have read a lot of other books on the financial crisis, though, so knew basically what was going to happen. The point of this film, though, is not to explain the crisis--the one bit of exposition about it occurs fifty minutes in--but to express how truly close we came to a complete credit freeze and everything falling apart. Part of this is DRAMATIC MUSIC and TENSE DIALOGUE, and should be taken with a grain of salt, but--if they were trying to convince an audience of how necessary TARP was, I think they're right. They also spend no time on trying to trace the blame before the crisis, though they show plenty of how destructively self-interested many of the players were as it unfolded.

The Losers - Saw this with [livejournal.com profile] trinityvixen in the theater, but that viewing was somewhat marred by the fact that I desperately had to pee and couldn't get up cause we were in the middle of a row. So, just for that, better in the rewatch. It's a completely fun, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin movie, and I think has been underrated. I was watching mostly for Chris Evans, who I did not recognize from this in Captain America, and it's still hard to convince myself it's the same actor, he plays them so differently. Also, Captain America's Evans makes Jensen's Evans look like a toothpick.
