For certain sports, like speed skating, or downhill skiing, or swimming, there are a bunch of different medal events. Yes, they each play to different strengths, but a very good skater or swimmer or skier can go to the Olympics and rack up the metals. (Bode Miller, Apollo Ohno, Michael Phelps, just for example.) But if you're a figure skater, you have to do several different routines that play to different strengths...for one medal. Why do figure skaters not have separate medals for each event? Or why don't skiers only have one medal?
