Duncan Sheik
Oct. 9th, 2008 11:11 amI've been listening to a lot of Duncan Sheik lately. I've got three of his albums, and as I was listening through them this time, I was trying to figure out why I like his eponymous album so much better than the others. After all, Humming, at least, has a very similar musical aesthetic to Duncan Sheik, and its music is no less artfully constructed.
I realized, though, that the difference was all in the lyrics. Duncan Sheik is all slightly melancholy but undeniably sweet love songs. They manage to be universal but not cliché, capturing mostly the confusion that comes along with love. Then there's Humming, which is mostly about fame and how fake people are. No wonder I prefer the album with lyrics like "happiness ain't never what you think it should be," to the one with lyrics like "you ain't nothing special," and "such an annoying conversation/sorry but I'm tired of trying to be some picture of compassion." The one is simple but beautiful reflections on love, the other is a lot of whining. So…yeah. I think I'll just listen to the first album for now.
