Strikethrough 2007
May. 31st, 2007 09:36 amIn case anyone out there has managed to miss this:
So Six Apart's CEO finally spoke up in an interview with CNet--and boy did he put his foot in it:
"Our decision here was not based on pure legal issues. It was based on what community we want to build and what we think is appropriate within that community and what's not."
A simple enough statement on the surface, but to fandom, them's fighting words.
Said CEO apologized for the deletions this morning, and for his CNet interview. The deleted accounts are being reviewed, so we'll see how this shakes out in the end. It seems like the deletions were supposed to be a good faith effort to eliminate groups supporting pedophelia and child abuse and that is what the above quote is about, but boy was it handled wrong.
This whole thing reminds me of an SVU episode (or twenty), and don't think I don't want to smack Olivia every time she equates writing fantasized versions of sexual crimes with actually committing said crimes. Little tiny difference there.
Also, all you fannish people, go and join
fandom_counts, where every sock puppet gets a vote! Seriously, it's an attempt to get a tally of how many of those 13 million lj accounts are fannish. As of this morning, 25,000.
