When I travelled to Europe with my family when I was growing up, I always ended up in the hotel room with my brother watching MTV, because it was the only channel in English. So we'd end up watching hours and hours of really awful music videos that I have vague recollections of.

I just discovered these videos on Youtube.

There's It's My Life by Dr. Alban which was number 1 in the Netherlands in 1991, which was when I was there. This is a terrible video. And not just that, it's a pretty bad song. It features lyrics like, "take a trip to East and West, you'll find out you don't know anything," and "stop fighting me, stop forcing me, stop yelling me," which isn't even good grammar.

There's Andres by L7, which was a hit in 1994, when I was in Italy. I actually walked down the streets of Venice singing this to annoy my brother. I apologize to all Italians who might have been scarred by this.

I couldn't find my favorite from '94, which was a song called "Piece of Crap." All I remembered was that the lyrics were "piece of crap" (try googling that) and the video was a handheld shot of a guy sort of dancing around backstage drinking a bottle of water. For the whole video. Turns out the song's by Neil Young.

There's no way I could remember when this one came out, but I swear I was also subjected to Jeopardy by the Greg Kihn Band, which was a lot more impressive to me when I was in grade school.

Aren't you just so glad that the internet makes it possible for me to find these gems again?
