The Pillers of sci fi
Nov. 22nd, 2005 10:03 amI was listening to an interview with Sean Piller yesterday, recorded during the first season of Dead Zone. For those of you not in the know, DZ is a collaboration between Sean Piller and his father Michael Piller (recently deceased). Michael Piller is famous mostly for his invaluable contributions to Star Trek:TNG.
In the interview, they mentioned the logo at the end of every DZ episode, where you hear:
"Yes."
"No!" (whiny)
"Yes!"
"No!" (whinier)
"Yes!"
"No!" (really, really whiny)
"You're grounded."
Maybe I should have put this together before, but that's Sean and Michael. Ah, the joys of a family business.
When I first got into Dead Zone, I viewed the Piller credits as an undeniable pedigree. In the interview, Sean talked about the episodes of Trek he actually wrote. The first was "Journey's End," which of all the crappy Wesley episodes was the crappiest. This episode ticked me off in so many ways and on so many levels. Piller is also responsible for "Death Wish" and "The Q and the Grey" on Voyager, episodes that turned Q into an abomination. These episodes undermined the entire concept of Q. They were crap.
So in conclusion, it seems my faith in Sean Piller is entirely misplaced. The episodes of Trek he wrote are the ones that make me look at the screen and go WTF??!?!?! They're not only bad on their own, their abuse of canon leeches the fun out of related episodes. Gah. I still can't get over the fact that "Journey's End" is all his fault. Need I remind anyone of the scene where Dr. Crusher gives Wesley a sweater because she doens't want him to get cold on a higher plane of existence?
Yeah. Nuf said.
