Brand New Day
Feb. 7th, 2005 10:17 amI've decided I have a love hate relationship with Sting's later work. I'm listening to Brand New Day now and I want to like this album, I really do, but there's just something off.
Take for example "Tomorrow We'll See." I love the lyrics, the vamp and the vocals. But then Sting goes and puts the smarmiest organ music ever recorded all over the chorus. What the hell was he thinking? And I won't even go into that trucking Christian song.
I want to say that Sting's arrangements were cleaner back in the day, but he's always had a talent for layering sound. It's just that this later stuff seems so overproduced. It's like Alan Parsons Project once all the talented musicians had left and all that remained was Parsons and his mixing machines.
Argh. I have to go listen to Dream of the Blue Turtles now.
