Harper, Seamus Zelazny
Aug. 4th, 2004 01:40 pmYou know, it's a sad sad day when you're disappointed with a TV show because it contradicts fanfic.
I finally have Andromeda season 2 on DVD and just watched the ep (Be All My Sins Remembered or some such) where we get a little backstory as to how Harper arrived on the Maru. I have two problems with this:
1 - When was that video shot? Before Harper came on board the first time? That would mean they paused while Nietzscheans were hunting them down for missing nukes so Harper could video tape getting hit by Bobby.
2 - I have read a lot of fanfic that gives Harper a much more interesting or edgy past than this. Two of my favorite versions, and I have no idea who wrote them, or what the story title was (sorry! sorry! no idea theft intended!) are that Beka never wanted Harper but Rev talked her into it because he felt he needed to atone for the horrors Harper had experienced at the hands of the Magog, or that Harper pre-Maru was a drug addict. Then to get such a vanilla story in canon... And you mean to tell me Rev arrived after Harper? Harper actually agreed to stay on a ship with a Magog? That don't make no sense.
Someday I will feel compelled to analyze just exactly how Andromeda jumped the shark in Season 2, because boy. It's the Kevin Sorbo action hour now. There is no better indicator of this than the DVD boxes. In season 1, each of the five DVD sets has a different cast member on the spine. In season 2, it's all Dylan. Grrr. Give more air time to the actually interesting characters.
