I'm spending the last day of the year trying to finish a 2019 photo album on Shutterfly before their sale on photo books ends. Over Christmas, I commented I'd only seen two movies in theatres this year (Hobbs & Shaw, and Knives Out), and my dad pointed out that, while that may be true, I'd seen a lot of theater theater. As I go through my selfies at shows (I always take one), I have to admit that's true.

My theater tally for the year:

Nutcracker Rouge - Company XIV

Queen of Hearts - Company XIV
By far the best of their shows I've yet seen, and I've gone to every show since Nutcracker Rouge 2013. This one was so good, Storm Marrero got scouted out of it and is now the ringmaster of Big Apple Circus.

Kiss Me Kate
Way more dick than I thought was in this. Also showed how different shows were then as compared to now in terms of the complete lack of integration of the song and dance numbers to the plot. Served to remind me that I really kind of hate Taming of the Shrew, and there's nothing you can do with that ending that doesn't make me want to punch something, even if this production removed the spanking.

Burn This
I just like seeing Adam Driver work. Not sure what I think about the play, but his performance was electric.

Merrily We Roll Along
Jesus, this play hits a lot harder in my late thirties than when I saw it in college.

Ink
Enjoyed seeing Johnny Lee Miller, but it was strange to be put in the headspace of Rupert Murdoch and the Sun as underdog, given how much I despise everything that newspaper did to journalsim.

Hadestown
*heart*

Betrayal
See previous post--loved this one.

Antigone
A Japanese language production at the Park Avenue Armory. I really loved it.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Saw this twice, so really, that should count for four shows. Loses the shine second time through, as a lot of the magic tricks work by directing your attention, and if you know where to look, you can see the set up. Glad I got the chance to see it again (for cheap), but I'm probably good now.

And I saw two concerts:
Lunasa and Natalie Merchant
Went with friends who were all excited to see Natalie Merchant, and oh she's singing with some Irish band. I was like, Lunasa! I love them! Sign me up! Not even the first time I've seen them perform.

Zoe Keating
Actually managed to get R to see it this time. Last time I went, I decided we should buy our tickets separately, then it sold out. That was the night I ill-advisedly finished a zombie killer (three types of rum AND absinthe! Woo!) by myself, had a conversation with Jad Abumrad I don't remember, then found myself most of the way to the subway with no memory of the intervening blocks. This time was not so eventful.

No Red Molly this year--their annual City Winery concert was the week after getting back from vacation, so I gave it a miss.
