Hello, new fandom!

I have started watching Numb3rs because my love for procedural TV shows, it is boundless. And the family dynamics are just as deliciously angsty as the presence of a small but devoted fandom would suggest.

But the plots--holy christ. The plots are ludicrous. There's believable procedural writing, then there's Criminal Intent, then there's NCIS, then there's NCIS:LA...then there's Numb3rs. Yes, I know, your conceit is math to solve crimes. But you expect me to believe there's a tipping point where average people just start killing people with rifles? Really? And for all that most of the time the math-position is accurate if banal, there's been at least one time where I was yelling at the screen, "What is your y-axis? What? You're plotting frequency--that's one dimensional! What's the other dimension?"

I'm also slightly creeped out by everyone pressuring Charlie to ask Amita out. Charlie seems aware of the fact that, as her thesis advisor, that is a Bad Idea that could get him fired. But no one else does. And even though they're the same age...I will never not find professors marrying their grad students creepy. I've known many who did, and it's...creepy. Sorry. So to have the show treat it like an average love interest and ignore the HE IS HER ADVISOR and THERE IS A CODE OF ETHICS thing is really weird.

Haha, yeah, wow, I love Numb3rs with a fierceness, but the less you try to apply things like "logic" and "anything resembling actual FBI procedures" the more you enjoy it. It's about math and awesome people! Doin' stuff! Fightin' crime! Uh, kind of.

The Charlie and Amita thing was weird in season one, but I like their dynamic in later seasons. Really I'm just in it for the Peter MacNicol love, and Rob Morrow's tight jeans/thigh holster combo. And the guest stars! Well... as far as season one is concerned.

Yeah, JGL is in one episode. And as soon as I saw him, it's like, welp. He did it.

Okay, rather than making a post, since I think you're the only one who cares..

What I love about Charlie in this show is that, though he's a supergenius and has a tendency to be consumed by his work and lose track of things, he's really socially adept. He's flirty, he's athletic, he doesn't seem to miss social cues at all. So he avoids a lot of the misanthropic nerd tropes.

In the little fic I've read so far, Charlie is always portrayed as the stereotyped nerd who doesn't get social interactions and is almost always extremely sexually inexperienced. This is not how the character reads to me at all.

I just watched an episode where he says he got a love letter when he was fourteen inviting him to a B&B for a dirty weekend. Now if a fourteen/fifteen/sixteen year old is receiving offers for sex from older women who are fans of his brain, even if he is awkward at that age, and obsessed with his work, and living with his mother...I don't really see him passing that up. I'd readily buy that Charlie lost his virginity at a younger age than Don. I want that fic. I want the dirtywrongbad Mrs. Robinson fic, maybe with Don finding out about and getting protective on Charlie's behalf even though Charlie doesn't want him to be.

The fandom is mostly Eppescest, but what bothers me is people seem to attack the angst of that relationship exclusively from the incest perspective. And it seems to me that they don't need any help to have angst. Don clearly has huge issues with resenting the fact that Charlie has always been the center of attention in the family. He's probably aware that their mother accompanying Charlie to Princeton almost ended his parents' relationship, even though Charlie wasn't. It seems like at this point Don has just come to accept that Charlie is and should be the special one. He's stopped questioning the underlying assumption that Charlie's better than him. I want fic that goes into that! All the incest fic I could just replace the names with Sam and Dean and I've read it before.
