Goodreads has a stats feature (did it always have this? Did I only just notice?), and according to that, the year that I read the most books by a mile was 2009, the year I was unemployed. But if I look at the individual titles, they are almost all books I read:
- to review for PW
- to review for my now ex-podcast
- to look good in an interview
- to proofread
So in none of those cases were they books I chose to read. I read almost nothing for the sheer joy of it that year.
This year is solidly middle for number of books, but it may flat out win for number of books I actually wanted to read.
Let this be a lesson about taking a job in the field of your passion.
