I spent all day rereading Sandman comics and...I seem to have ficced.

“There was—” Hob cleared his throat. “I can’t believe I’m even going to say this, but…were there a few years there where…the world was run by cats?”

When I read the comic, I always took it as a given that Dream told the truth to the cat and the world had indeed been shaped by dreams and could be again.

When I watched the show, it occurred to me: It could be utter bullshit. Dream gave the grieving cat a dream to pursue (similar to, say, the dreams he gave to Madoc or took away from the cereal convention) and it didn't matter if it was real or not.

Yeah, I think you can totally read it as Dream fucking with the cat. But honestly, I get the feeling Dream would be just as fine being a feline-morphic representation for cats as an anthropomorphic representation for humans. Desire, Despair, and Delirium would probably be pissed though--what is desire going to do with a heat cycle? Delirium would be limited to catnip binges. Which might honestly be enough incentive for Dream to make the cats flip the universe. He's capricious like that.
