Yanno, I'd have to review the story I'm reccing below again, BUT...a lot of the best fiction can be found only in zines and not online.
Dana Austin Marsh has a double zine that basically writes the backstory behind what we actually saw on the show - how they met, their relationship on and off within working together - rather like you mention there. Whether or not they do just what you say, I can't recall (I have a memory like a steel sieve, which makes for very nice re-reading, lol), but the zine is called Evolution (One and Two). I can send you the contact info on purchasing these. If you've read anything by Dana, you know it'll be good. I completely treasure my set. :)
That being said, it's not like other folks haven't tackled the backstory, too - this is just the one I really love.
There are a couple of mailing lists - yahoogroups - to join if you're interested. One is a slash/gen friendly list and then there's also a rec list that offers up lovely stories in themes.
