Against All Odds

I love Phil Collins, but I admit that he's a giant cheeseball—especially his later pop music. I was listening to This American Life last night, though, and they have an interview with him talking about love songs and Phil talks about the break-up of his first marriage and its influence on his music. And he's just so…earnest. It just makes me love his sappy stuff even more.

At the end, Starlee and Phil are talking about how at least this way, there's a tangible piece of music that came out of the awful break up. (Phil's been talking about how he never would have had a solo career if not for the divorce—he would have stayed a back-up jazz musician.) Starlee asks him if he'd rather have the song or the relationship. There's a long pause and then he says, the relationship.

He also says that he spent all this time writing songs right after the divorce and he really did think that he'd play them and his wife would understand how he felt and take him back.

Oh, Phil!

You can listen to it here. It's the first segment.
