No way can he really think what they fight is random, or deny that things like faith and holy water and the name of Christ have power.
I agree. I think he just has such a hard time accepting the death of his mother and the evil that they fight and still believing in the goodness of God. And he's not alone in that. There's a reason why the religion department at my college had a course called "The Problem of Evil."
Deep down I think he has faith, but I don't think he's capable of rationally confronting that.
And I'd totally forgotten about Pastor Jim! I'm sort of annoyed that the show basically used him as a woman-in-refrigerator since he seems to be one of the only people John turned to for help when he was raising the boys.
